A fence usually fails from the ground up. The boards can look serviceable while the posts have gone soft at the concrete line — which is why a run that survived one winter drops in the next. These are the signs the whole boundary is due:

• Posts that move when you push the fence
• Rot at the base of the posts or gravel boards
• More than a couple of bays already leaning or gone
• Panels held up by props, wire or a neighbour's shed
• Old concrete spurs bolted on to keep posts standing
• A boundary that no longer runs to line or level

A replacement is an installation with a demolition in front of it. The old fence comes out, the line is re-set, and the new run goes up on new concrete posts and gravel boards.

• New concrete posts set in concrete
• Gravel boards fitted along the base
• Removal and disposal of the old fence — optional extra, priced separately

Old posts are the part people underestimate. Pulling a set of concreted-in spurs is real work, and it's one of the reasons a replacement can price above a bare-plot install of the same length.

Wind takes fences down at the weakest point, and by the time one bay has gone the rest of the run has usually taken the same load. Where a whole boundary or a full run needs rebuilding, we price it as a replacement and fit it with our own team. Photos of the damage through the estimate form are enough to get a figure back.
