What a new fence costs per metre in London
Timber fencing supplied and fitted in London runs from £140/m to £230/m on a typical back-garden run, inc VAT. Overlap panels sit at the bottom from £140/m, closeboard from £165/m, hit-and-miss and slatted from £190/m, and composite — which never needs treating — from £320/m. Metal railings start at £215/m. Our minimum job is from £1,200, because a crew, a van and a materials run cost the same whether the fence is 4 m or 14 m.
Cost per metre is the honest unit for fencing because almost everything scales with length: posts every 2.4–3 m, gravel boards along the base, rails, boards and the concrete that holds it all up. Length is also why short runs look expensive — the fixed cost of turning up is spread over fewer metres, which is exactly what the calculator above accounts for when you drag the slider down.
Worked example: a typical 18 m back garden
Eighteen metres is the most common London back boundary we price. Installed, inc VAT, on standard ground with normal access:
| Fence type | 18 m installed | Why you'd pick it |
|---|---|---|
| Overlap | £2,520–£3,150 | Cheapest way to close a boundary. |
| Closeboard | £2,970–£4,050 | Built board by board — solid and no gaps. |
| Hit-and-miss | £3,510–£4,140 | Private from both sides, and it lets wind through. |
| Slatted | £3,420–£4,050 | The contemporary look, spaced boards. |
| Composite | £5,760–£6,840 | No rot, no treating, 25-year board guarantee. |
Removing and disposing of your old fence is an optional extra, priced separately — it is not inside these figures.
What pushes a fence price up in London
- No side access — every board and every barrow through the house
- Nowhere to park the van within carrying distance
- Sloping ground needing a stepped or raked run
- Old concrete posts and spurs that have to be dug out whole
- Trees, roots and outbuildings sitting on the boundary line
- Height above the standard 6 ft, or a bespoke finish
Posts are the other lever. We set concrete posts with gravel boards as standard because timber posts are what fail first at ground level — it is the difference between a fence that stands for a decade and one you re-buy. For the full picture of a new run, read fence installation in London; if you're taking an old boundary out first, see fence replacement in London.
What's included in these prices
- Concrete posts and gravel boards
- Pressure-treated timber, properly graded
- Standard waste from the new build
- Two-person crew, fully insured
- Day-rates priced to your region, not one national number
- Standard ground — no rock, no retaining wall
Things that push the price up: steep slopes, full demolition of a masonry boundary, no rear access, >50m runs, or a same-week turnaround. We flag all of that at the survey before any price is locked.
