Fencing in London.
London gardens are long, narrow and hemmed in on three sides, which is why a fence job here is really an access job with some carpentry attached. Victorian and Edwardian terraces run 12 to 20 metres of boundary with nothing but a side return or a shared alley to carry timber down; post-war semis in the outer boroughs are easier but sit on made-up ground where old footings and buried rubble turn a straightforward post hole into a half-hour job. We work from our South-West London base, so most of the capital is inside the closest survey band.
What the ground here does to a fence
Clay across the south and east, made-up ground and buried rubble near anything rebuilt after the war, and tree roots wherever there is a street plane or a mature garden boundary. Concrete posts earn their keep on exposed runs.
